      Accompanied by opera critic Adrian Mourby, explore the highlights of the ‘Floating City’ this winter including two opera performances and some hidden gems.

      Based for four nights in a central hotel in Venice, take in the sights of this UNESCO listed city accompanied by special guest and opera critic Adrian Mourby. With two opera performances including one at La Fenice opera house, one of the most renowned landmarks of Italian theatre, this is a unique way of exploring such a remarkable city that has played an important role in artistic movements during its intriguing history, particularly the Renaissance period.

      As well as visiting Venice’s highlights, go ‘off the beaten track’ and explore sights associated with artists and composers, see Venice’s most eccentric bookshop and take in some hidden churches, including a day trip to Isola San Michele, the picturesque cemetery island.

      Itinerary

      Day 1 - Arrival (L, D)

      On arrival, transfer to Piazzale Roma followed by a water taxi transfer down the Grand Canal to your hotel for the next four nights. After lunch, take a short orientation tour to Piazza San Marco. This evening, enjoy a welcome drink and introductory talk before dinner.

      Day 2 - Venice (B, L, D)

      Start the day with your first walking tour, taking in the Arsenale and staying entirely within the Castello, one of the most authentic of Venice’s sestieri. See sights associated with Petrarch, Henry James, John and Sebastian Cabot, Canaletto, Antonio Vivaldi and Inspector Brunetti, the fictional hero of Donna Leon’s novels about modern Venice. Before lunch, we also pay Venice’s most eccentric bookshop a visit! After dinner, walk to Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto on the Grand Canal for a chamber performance (production TBC).

      Day 3 - Venice (B, L)

      Today’s walking tour takes you through Piazza San Marco and the Merceria to Rialto, taking in some hidden churches. Walk to the top of the Rialto Bridge for a photo stop before a coffee break. Stroll through the backstreets of Cannearegio to see the Malibran Theatre, the Miracoli Church, and, finally, Basilica of Saints Giovanni and Paulo where one could spend an entire day. After lunch, spend the afternoon at leisure.

      Day 4 - Venice / Isola San Michele (B, D)

      This morning, visit John Ruskin’s favourite Venetian Church, Madonna dell’Orto, before walking past Tintoretto’s House and catching the vaporetto to Isola San Michele, Venice’s picturesque cemetery island, to visit the graves of Stravinsky, Diaghilev, Ezra Pound and several lesser-known (but deeply romantic) figures.

      After an independent lunch, reconvene for a performance of Verdi’s La Traviata at La Fenice before our farewell dinner.

      Day 5 - Departure (B)

      Transfer to the airport for departure.
