Explore the sweeping red backdrops of Jordan, the land that captivated T.E. Lawrence.

The iconic image of Jordan is that of the monumental architecture at Petra, described by Burgon in the 19th century as a “rose-red city, half as old as time”. Yet Petra is not the only gem Jordan has to offer. Often viewed as a haven in an area of conflict, positioned at the crossroads between Asia, Africa and Europe, Jordan is characterised by its welcoming locals, a plethora of World Heritage Sites, and stunning desert landscapes.

This tour will uncover Jordan’s rich heritage, allowing you to explore various aspects of its archaeological remains, from the Nabateans and Romans through to early Islam and the Crusades. You will explore the Greco-Roman ruins of Jerash, the ‘Pompeii of the East’, and marvel at the Crusader castle, Kerak, as well as spotting the traces of early Christianity in Madaba and enjoying a dip in the Dead Sea. The tour will uncover Jordan from north to south, taking you along the King’s Highway, the ancient trading route, all the way to the striking landscape of Wadi Rum; a day trip to the desert castles of the east completes this once in a lifetime tour.

      Words from Your Tour Coordinator…

“We introduced Jordan to our escorted touring program in 2018, and, since then, the destination has become one of our main highlights, particularly with private touring and bespoke packages.

It’s not easy to be ‘off the beaten track’ in countries like Jordan, where the tourist trail is so firmly established in order to see spectacular Petra, ‘Wonder of the World’, but we are proud of our itinerary’s unique take. First, not only do we see the highlights of this haven in the Middle East – and there are many – but we also visit some ‘off the beaten track’ gems including the early Islamic desert castles of the east on a full-day loop and a school for the restoration of mosaics in Madaba. Secondly, our itinerary also has a more cultural offering: enjoy a wine tasting experience in Amman, dine in local eateries wherever possible, and finish the tour with an authentic cooking class before feasting on your creation. Finally, our standard of accommodation is high throughout, including one night in a luxury star-gazing tent in the expansive Wadi Rum desert.”

      Day 1 - Arrival (D)

Arrival. Transfer to the hotel in Amman for dinner and overnight. Amman’s earliest settlement was Neolithic, but the city itself was once known as Philadelphia, a city of the Decapolis, a group of ten city-states in the Middle East linked together by their Hellenistic origins and culture.

      Day 2 - Amman (B, D)

Visit the ruins of Amman’s Roman theatre, the Citadel, and the Umayyad palace before time at leisure. This evening, enjoy a wine-tasting experience and a welcome dinner in an authentic restaurant.

      Overnight: Amman

      Day 3 - Umm Qais / Jerash (B, D)

Today, visit two more cities which were once part of the Decapolis. Depart to Hellenistic city Umm Qais, enjoying its spectacular views over the Golan Heights and the Sea of Galilee. Proceed to the Greco-Roman city of Jerash, the ‘Pompeii of the East’, to explore its monumental remains and iconic oval forum. Despite being part of the Decapolis, both cities have extraordinary differences, and here we see the contrast between the black basalt construction of Umm Qais and the Roman baroque architectural flourishes of Jerash.

      Overnight: Amman

      Day 4 - Desert Castle Loop (B, L, D)

Visit the east of Jordan, exploring some of its lesser-known but equally stunning desert castles on a full-day loop, to admire the architecture of the Umayyads and their extraordinary frescoes.

      Overnight: Amman

      Day 5 - Kerak (B, D)

Depart through the meandering King’s Highway, once part of the Silk Road and still bearing the marks of ancient use. The journey takes you via Wadi Mujib, a deep valley offering one of Jordan’s most breath-taking views.

Stop at Kerak to visit its Crusader castle and explore its diverse history.

Continue to Petra for dinner and overnight.

      Overnight: Petra

      Day 6 - Petra (B, D)

Spend a full day at the Nabatean city of Petra, the most iconic site in Jordan that has captured the imagination of countless writers and visitors. See the Treasury and learn about the Nabatean people who occupied Jordan and made Petra their capital before they were annexed by the Romans.

      Overnight: Petra

      Day 7 - Beida / Wadi Rum (B, L, D)

This morning, explore Beida (‘Little Petra’), a smaller site originally occupied in the Neolithic period and renowned for one of its surviving Nabatean frescoes. Continue to the desert landscape of Wadi Rum for a 4×4 tour. Drink a cup of traditional Bedouin tea before transferring to your desert ‘camp’. A highlight in itself, stay in the camp’s luxury ‘Martian Domes’ with all the amenities of a hotel.

      Overnight: Wadi Rum

      Day 8 - Madaba / Mt Nebo / Dead Sea (B, L)

En route to the Dead Sea, stop at Madaba, the ‘city of mosaics’. Tour the archaeological park and visit a school for the restoration and conservation of ancient mosaics. Continue to Mount Nebo, one of Jordan’s holiest sites, featuring ruins from the 4th to the 7th century.

      Overnight: Dead Sea

      Day 9 - Dead Sea / Amman (B, D)

Enjoy time at leisure, floating in the Dead Sea or making use of the hotel’s spa facilities.

This afternoon, transfer back to Amman for a special farewell dinner at Beit Sitti, an authentic Arabic cooking school.

      Overnight: Amman
