An expert-guided, all-encompassing exploration of Ancient Greek culture and history throughout the Peloponnese. From Mycenaeans to Classical Athens, from the Hellenistic to the Roman, delve deep into the history and culture of Greece.

The Peloponnese is a rugged and dramatic land, where the rough mountains and the wine-dark seas are in constant juxtaposition. The ‘Island of Pelops’ was the hub of early Mycenaean civilization, played home to the famous Spartans, and also gave birth to the modern Olympic Games. The people are both hospitable and proud of their heritage and traditions; they always wish you to sample the best of their cuisine – washed down, of course, with the local village wine.

During the 10 days of this tour, we will experience the ancient history and mythology of the lands of Attica and the Peloponnese, presented in a wonderfully all-encompassing style. Specialist guide lecturer Dr Christina Hatzimichael-Whitley will take you to Greece’s most impressive archaeological sites, including panoramic views at Cape Sounion, oracles at the Sanctuary of Delphi, running on the track at Olympia, and the haunting Byzantine towns of Mystras and Monemvasia. With meals at the best restaurants and tavernas handpicked by our team, you are sure to go to sleep every night sated not just by culinary delights but also by the events of the day.

      Words from Your Tour Coordinator…

“My love of the Peloponnese started as a very young boy when I was taken on family holidays to Greece to see relatives who lived in both Attica and the Peloponnese itself. For me, it is the absolute hub of the culture and mythology that invokes the best imagery that one associates with the Ancient Greek world. It is this fantasy coupled with incredible natural scenery and mouth-watering cuisine that makes this location the best place to share with others. I created the itinerary for this tour with the desire to tell an all-encompassing tale of the history of this land, its people and culture. The sites included are amongst the most impressive and most important to this narrative, and what could be more of a highlight than taking in an original theatrical production in the wonderful setting of Epidaurus. I was lucky enough to have previously experienced this spectacle when I was 15 years old; it has stayed with me since, and I relish the opportunity to experience it again.”

      Itinerary

      Day 1 - Arrival (D)

Arrival. Check in before reconvening for a drive along the southern Attica coast road to visit the spectacular Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. Enjoy an introduction to Greek cuisine at your welcome dinner.

      Overnight: Athens

      Day 2 - Athens (B)

Visit the Acropolis to see its main sights, including the Parthenon. Stroll down to the Temple of Hephaestus and continue to Syntagma Square to witness all the pomp and ceremony involved in the changing of the guard.

      Overnight: Athens

      Day 3 - Phocis / Delphi (B, L)

Journey to the ‘Navel of the Universe’ in the Greek prefecture of Phocis. Visit the archaeological museum and ancient sanctuary of Delphi. The site itself occupies the south-western slope of Mt. Parnassus and commands stunning views across the ruins and the valley below.

      Overnight: Delphi

      Day 4 - Olympia (B, L, D)

For the first time in this tour, cross over into the Peloponnese, stopping en route to marvel at the Rio-Antirrio Bridge. Heading to Olympia, spend all afternoon exploring the birth place of the Pan–Hellenic Olympic Games, where, every four years, the torch of the games is lit anew. A visit to the exceptional collections of the Olympia museum is also included.

      Overnight: Olympia

      Day 5 - Mystras (B, L, D)

Find yourself in the atmospheric Plain of Sparta to visit the beautiful and eerie abandoned town of Mystras. Although still populated until the 1960s and a shadow of its former greatness, this was once a great scholarly centre of the Byzantine Empire.

      Overnight: Monemvasia

      Day 6 - Monemvasia / At leisure (B)

Optional walking tour of the old town of Monemvasia. Otherwise, enjoy a day at leisure.

      Overnight: Monemvasia

      Day 7 - Mycenae / Epidaurus (B, L)

Visit Mycenae to see the fabled home of King Agamemnon and the hub of ‘Greek’ culture from 1600 to 1100 BC. Continue to Epidaurus for arguably the highlight of the tour, a guaranteed seat on the stone steps of the theatre to witness an Ancient Greek production in an original setting.

      Overnight: Nafplio

      Day 8 - Epidaurus / Nafplio (B)

Return to Epidaurus to explore the site that hosted last night’s spectacle. In Nafplio, enjoy free time or an optional climb of the Palamidi Castle via 999 carved stone steps (or take a taxi!) and marvel at the inspiring views across the Argolic Gulf.

      Overnight: Nafplio

      Day 9 - Corinth / Athens (B, D)

Visit the Ancient City of Corinth that was home to both Greek and Roman populations and is famous for being the focus of St. Paul’s pious instructions. After lunch, complete our full circle of the Peloponnese and return to Athens for the afternoon at leisure.

      Overnight: Athens

      Day 10 - Departure (B)
