The three nations that comprise the Baltic Republics are some of the most affluent and upcoming in all of Europe. Known for being the source of Europe’s amber trade (The Amber Road – dating back over 44 million years), these gems of Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius are cultural jewels, polished and waiting to be discovered.

Three countries very unique in character and history make up the Baltic States. Lands carpeted in vast swathes of lush green forest, shorelines awash with ancient amber, and a people that have endured many conflicts and crusades over hundreds of years. The countries of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were colonised by Vikings, were some of the last bastions of pagan religions in Europe (targeted by years of Christian crusades) and suffered heavily under both Soviet and Nazi rule. In the modern world, all three countries boast a high standard of living, beautiful archaeological sites and national parks, and also vibrant hubs of culture as their capital cities.

This tour of the Baltics will take you from the imposing castle of Trakai, to stunning amber finds at Palanga. From Europe’s widest waterfall in Kuldiga, to the vibrant old-town of Riga. From the shores of Lake Peipsi and to conclude in the gorgeous city of Tallinn. Join Prestige Holidays on an exceptional adventure to uncover the Baltic States.

      The Baltic’s Amber…

“The Baltic region is home to the largest known deposit of amber, dating back over 44 million years. A natural fossilized tree resin similar to sap, containing a high natural content of succinic acid, it comes in a variety of colours including white, green, pink, blue, and even black. It is most commonly associated with the amber colour form, which is most common. Amber is often worn as jewellery as it has apparent natural healing properties and is often used as a homeopathic anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. It has been estimated that the forests of this region created more than 100,000 tonnes of amber, and today, 90% comes from Kaliningrad, who extract around 400 tonnes a year. Quite often, extracted amber contains the entombed remains of extinct flowers and insects in an almost pristine state. Sometimes dubbed the ‘gold of the north’, it was an important commodity in pre-16th century Europe and the ‘Amber Road’ was an ancient trade route running from the Baltic States to Southern Europe. Today, amber is still in high demand and can fetch a high price, used mainly for fashion purposes. During our tour, you will have ample opportunity to view and purchase some of the region’s amber in numerous forms, and we will also visit the famous Pelanga Amber Museum in Lithuania.”
